Refund Policy
Last updated: 2026-09-30
OpenChess subscriptions are processed by Paddle.com, which acts as our Merchant of Record. This means Paddle is the seller of record for all transactions and handles refund requests.
1. Merchant of Record
All payments for OpenChess Premium subscriptions are processed by Paddle.com (Paddle Payments Ltd). Paddle handles billing, invoicing, sales tax, VAT, and refunds on our behalf. When you subscribe, your contract for payment is with Paddle, not directly with OpenChess.
2. 14-Day Refund Guarantee
You can request a full refund of your subscription within 14 days of your initial purchase or of any renewal. No justification is required. The guarantee covers:
Both the monthly and the yearly subscription
The first payment as well as every automatic renewal
Subscriptions taken at a discounted rate, including the founder rate
This guarantee applies unconditionally, including after the service has started being performed. It therefore grants you at least the equivalent of the 14-day right of withdrawal provided by European Union consumer law, without requiring you to waive it in order to access the service immediately.
Beyond those 14 days, partial or pro-rated refunds are not offered. You can cancel at any time and keep Premium access until the end of the period you already paid for.
3. How to Request a Refund
To request a refund, you can:
Contact us at contact@openchess.app with your account email and reason for the refund
Contact Paddle directly through the payment receipt email you received
Refund requests are typically processed within 5-10 business days. The refund will be issued to the original payment method.
4. Cancellation vs. Refund
Canceling your subscription is different from requesting a refund:
Cancellation: stops future renewals. You keep Premium access until the end of your current billing period.
Refund: reverses a payment. Your Premium access may be revoked immediately upon refund approval.
5. Free Plan
The Free plan is entirely free of charge. No payment information is required, and no refund situation can arise.
